This blog is formed around a picture of the children from Sunshine Preschool in the year of 1961 in Orangeburg, SC. Mrs. Thelma Yonce was the main teacher. (Mrs. Yonce was the grandmother of Jeanie Dunwoody and Woody Dunwoody.) Mrs.Ashlyn Gray wrote all the names of the children under the picture in her daughter's scrapbook (Julie Gray).

This blog is to share the picture and the memories with those who went to Sunshine Preschool and/or their families.

A memory:

"Jeanie and I rode in the same carpool to Sunshine Preschool. Miss Dorothy picked us up. Every morning we rode by the Sunbeam Bakery on Broughton? St. and all the little children in the car chanted..."I smell Sunbeam bread!", "I smell Sunbeam bread!", "I smell Sunbeam bread!" until we had passed it and couldn't smell it anymore."

Actually, this was not the graduating class, but all of the children in Sunshine Preschool in 1961. I know because I see Kay Ayers and Sharon Ayers and Lee Clarke and Les Mizzelle and Pam Wanamaker, Cynthia Dean, Ryn Felder, Jeanie Dunwoody, Linda Fairey, Drake Johnson, Ann Wells...all these children were a younger bunch.

Some of us went on to first grade the next school year:
Julie Gray, Vicki Clarke, Sheri Sims, Mike Riordan, Cathy Fairey, Jeanie Blackmon, Jimmy Guthrie, Ann Jennings, Karen Dudley, Ann Dean, Cindy Austelle, Pauline Atwill, Brian Smith, Woody Dunwoody, Henry Judy.

"Most of us went on to first grade at Sheridan Elementary School on Hillsboro Road in Orangeburg, SC. My first grade teacher was Mrs. Hazel Green. For second grade I had Mrs. Bernie Ackerman, third grade I had Mrs. Eva Covington, fourth-Mrs. Addie Sturgeon, fifth-Mrs. Bondurant (we did creative dancing in her class and went on field trips in the playground. What a fun teacher she was!), and sixth-Mrs. K. Bondurant again (I didn't fail, she moved up to teach sixth grade)"

Then on to Thackston Junior High School, then Orangeburg High School which soon became Orangeburg-Wilkinson High School. Many went to Wade Hampton or Willington Academy, but not me. I did graduate a year early because the public schools were a mess at the time. I ended up homeschooling my five children.
